What is GatorBox?

GatorBox is an enhanced storage option for research data that features a Dropbox-like interface and is connected to HiPerGator.

The software that supports GatorBox is ownCloud, an easy-to-use file synchronization and sharing interface. We are running the Enterprise Edition of ownCloud.

GatorBox is part of the GatorCloud infrastructure, which also includes the OneDrive@UF storage option. These services are complementary, but distinct. The differences between the two services are shown in the table below.

Do not store sensitive data

The official UF policy for the GatorBox storage system states that no sensitive data should be stored, transferred, or shared via the service.

Sensitive data includes:

  • Protected health information (PHI)
  • Credit or debit card numbers
  • Financial account numbers
  • Full or partial Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s License numbers
  • Passport numbers
  • Student educational records, including grades, UFID, photos
  • Information prohibited from export such as ITAR or EAR
  • Any other sensitive data that must be protected from public access

Using the web interface

To log in with the web interface:

  1. In your web browser, navigate to http://gatorbox.rc.ufl.edu
  2. Authenticate with your GatorLink username and password.
  3. Initially, storage is presented as a small amount of buffer space that is provided to Research Computing customers and is accessible only from the ownCloud web interface and client applications.
  4. Users can connect existing Research computing storage to GatorBox. This is considered external storage. Please see our step-by-step instructions for configuring external storage.

Download the sync client software

In addition to the web interface, ownCloud storage can be accessed via a convenient and fast client which is available for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Android Available for purchase from the Google Play or Amazon App store.


We have an APK file for Android devices that you can manually install to avoid charges.

ownCloud will detect new versions of client software automatically and prompt you to upgrade.
